There are numerous forms of culture and art that we see and hear all around us. From dance, music and poetry to traditional art, we see art and culture as an expression of our lives.

I was never very invested in art that is defined more traditionally, but I still had a window to art from my own room. That was the computer screen from where I first started exploring video games.
Video games, like all forms of art, take on many different forms and expressions. They can be appreciated in various aspects, but the ones I was drawn to often involved compelling stories and environments.

Within these environments were the characters and places painstakingly brought to life by artistic hands.

When I attempt to draw the art that is present within these games, I often think of the way their stories made me feel and think.

I believe that the inspiration to do fanart comes from an appreciation of the source material and the things that we have learnt from them. Similarly, these emotions and feelings often define that way we approach fanart.
Fanart to me is a simple and compelling way to pick up the pencil or pen and start drawing to my content. It is non-judgmental and stress-free and brings a small slice of joy to my artistic journey.

It is also an excellent way to refine and develop my artistic skills. In fact, fanart was one of the first pieces of art that got me started on drawing and coloring.
Fanart can also be inspired by other art forms, like comics, movies, books and shows. There are no limits to what can or cannot be fanart, If the original works of the author or artis are respected.

I feel that fanart is dictated not solely by the skills of the artist, but by the ways that we are moved by what we experience.
In my opinion, creating fanart is an easy way to get started on becoming an artist. This is even more true if you are already a fan of a specific genre or piece of work.

Fanart helps me discover my skills and abilities as an artist and designer. At the same time, it allows me to express my admiration for something that feels close to me.

When I feel bored or uninspired, I can rely on fanart as a form of self-expression that is free of judgement.
What I love about the games that I create fanart about has always been the stories within them that rivet me.

Without the morals that these stories encompass, they would feel dull. Doing fanart on things that I appreciate brings with it a greater sense of enjoyment.
I believe that as with other forms of art, human feelings and experiences do translate into the things that we create. My experience playing through a video game that tells a story defines how I approach creating art based off it.

Learning to appreciate the stories that we tell through our art is an ability that makes each piece of work unique and memorable.
My thoughts on fanart are that they are highly shareable, easy to get into, and greatly rewarding. However, whilst creating fanart is fun, it also important to respect the rights of the owners of intellectual property.

The art of creating fanart involves not just an ability to imitate but also an ability of original expression. Try it!
