Why Make Bookmarks?
Start a simple DIY project as a meaningful way to spend your time. Learn a simple craft and put your works up for sale.
I wanted to start with a beginner-friendly project, so I chose to make simple bookmarks. The benefits were to introduce me to do-it-yourself projects and making pieces of art and craft that can be sold.
I used cheaper watercolour paper. I folded and trimmed the watercolour paper to the desired size, keeping in mind to double them in thickness by sticking two pieces together with glue.
Next, I thought of the designs to go onto the front of the bookmarks. Do your own research and come up with cute or quirky ideas of your own! Pinterest is a good place to ideate on the different possibilities.
How Much Should I Spend?
Make it a point to reuse and reduce. Look around for whatever you can find. Old brushes, used paint, thread, or stationery all will suit your needs. Spend less for more, especially when starting out.
For my bookmarks, I used a combination of watercolour paints, brush pens, fine liners, and a simple pencil for sketching designs. I got waxed thread, a one-hole puncher, metal eyelets and Stardream paper to glue onto the back side of the bookmarks.
I also used a cutting mat and a simple penknife for all my trimming needs. White glue or craft glue was good enough for this project.
Keep the finished pieces in folders, individually in empty pockets so that they stay protected.
What To Do With My Bookmarks?
Put them up for sale on places like Etsy or post them onto your online platforms for sharing! Or keep them as mementos of your hard work.
I painted colour onto the bookmarks before adding on with brush pens and markers. Remember to let the paint and ink dry in between your work so that they do not smudge or blend unnecessarily.
Next, I used craft glue to paste the backing paper onto the bookmarks.
I used a simple one-hole punch on the top middle of the bookmarks, then proceeding to affix metal eyelets onto the hole. Finally, the waxed thread goes in and knots simply.
Use a corner punch to give create the rounded ends to the bookmarks as desired. Trim any rough edges of the bookmarks with a sharp scissor.
Conclusion: Is it Worth It?
Making bookmarks definitely gives me an appreciation for the people who do this professionally. It also gives me confidence in my own abilities.
